I first heard Mahogany Rush on the Cal Jam 2 album. You are correct he stole the show!! I was teaching myself guitar at the time, and was looking to buy a Gibson Les Paul since my favortie guitar player was Jan Akkerman of the band Focus (Hocus Pocus fame). Frank's playing was so aggressive and fluid that I decided to buy a Gibson SG instead. The sound was still classic Gibson, but the guitar had a better feel to me. I attempted to learn his style of playing. I wasn't able to grasp fully his technique, but was able to learn some of their songs: Somethings commin our way, Dragonfly, Johnny B Goode, and most of MR IV. I bought back issues of Guitar player to determine the equipment he used. I was able to collect all of his albums except the off shutes (imports) of that time in the 70's/80's. I was finally able to watch him on CAL JAM 2 on a special airing in the summer of 80. To this day that show is my favorite recording of his. Some people just have presence on stage...Frank had thousands watching his every move that concert. My fellow bandmates always compared him to Hendrix, but I never felt he sounded like him. To me, his playing was totally his own. Though when he did play a Hendrix tune, Frank sounded better. I then set out to buy the effects that he used ...all I could afford, to gain that sound. I did gather quite an assortment of effects and did play some MR tunes. Then in mid 80's I was working in Phoenix and was able to see Frank live in a club there, sorry I don't remember the name. He was amazing! The man played to a pack house and delivered that presence I had seen in the CAL JAM II concert video. He gave me 100% of what I was wanting to see and hear. His playing pulls you into his world and gives you the ride of a life time. I was only dissappointed when the concert was over. I haven't seen him since, which really bothers me, but I did see him at least once. Seeing MY guitar hero and the man who inspired me to play, to this day (24 years) will always be a Rush to me. Frank if your reading this I would like to say "Thank You!" for the inspiration. Your even listed in my high school yearbook 1980 Pitman NJ. I still have my first electric guitar, the original SG I bought in 1979 that you inspired me to buy. It has been totally refinished, and has seen many miles, but it is my favorite guitar. I've had nearly 25 guitars over the last 24 years, but that is the one that I'll probably be buried with. I've introduced my kids to your music and they really enjoy "Dragonfly". So now the next generation of Frank fans has begun at my house. Please feel free to contact me if you ever want to chat. Christopher Smith cssmith@nortelnetworks.com
