Having been a classic rock fan since the mid-70's (which is also about the time I started playing drums, which I still do), Frank Marino's music didn't come to me until the early eighties when I happened upon a college friend's vinyl copy of "Tales of the Unexpected." The transition from "Hendrix-style" to the up-tempo jazz guitar on the title track was just really cool and I continue to listen to it more than 20 years later. Needless to say, the impressive drumming of Jimmy Ayoub on this track was mind-boggling, considering that "Rush" is probably my all-time favorite group and Neil Peart plays better now than ever. (sorry I got off the subject) Anyhow, I'm glad to see Frank back playing again. His new live album sounds incredible, I need to get my hands on it although seeing him live would be even better. Rock on! Mr. T (AKA Roaddog61)

Frank -

I've been listening to you for 31 years since I discovered you in my freshman year of college. I knew a campus radio station DJ - he was this wacked out English grad student. Funny thing was, I always hated English as a subject, but this guy was into all sorts of music and I had just started to listen to music over the prior year. Of course when I was young, I played trumpet for a few years in grade school... Anyway, this DJ had an early morning show, and he told me I could come on with him and play whatever I wanted to bring. So I brought "Child of the Novelty" and played some stuff off of it, notably Guitwar.... I was suppose to see you once in '75 when you were opening for Queen, but Freddie Mercury got sick and the show was cancelled... to my huge disappointment. I've never seen you, always wanted to. I finally bought your latest CD and I'm listening to "RealLIVE!" as I type this (for the first time) and loving it big time. I don't find a ton of stuff these days that takes me back to my youth, not that it's nostalgic, just it's got that energy. Well, I've gone on long enough. I look forward to the re-issues mentioned in the CD booklet, as I can hopefully fill in a few holes in my collection. Finally, Willy Parsons has an interesting idea about an all blues CD... of course played in the Frank Marino style...

thanks,
John

Imagine being a 14-year old kid at the end of the 1970s and finding your way to some 'new' music.

I picked up on Frank and the band thru a CBS compilation in the spring of 1980 that featured Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. It took me off my feet, and it still does.

There must have been 100 disappointments or missed gigs since then, but it's funny how your love for music remains.

Thank you, Frank for opening the windows. You have no idea just how far the ripples you made in my little pond have gone.

And I often wonder, whatever happened to Frank Coughlan in England? Is he still around?

Frank,
My name is Carey Sanders I grew up in Chicago on Northtrip Ave and went to school at Noble Elementary School. You wouldn't happen to be familiar with that street or school would you. I remember a guy older than me by about 6 or so years who would practice his guitar in the back of his apartment house and also a guy who I believe could also play the trumpet. I believe he may be the same one who came to my kindergarten class or 1st grade under Mrs. Barrons and played for us one day. My brother is four years older than me and his name is Phillip. Could you be the same person as that Frank Marino?

It's nice to know that there are still guys carrying the torch for rock...the trouble in New Zealand is that we have been hoodwinked by the music mafia and New Zealand couldn't produce a decent rock band if it tried...cept for me, and I can't do by myself!!

Thanks Frank for the inspiration...

This is amazing I had been wondering what has been going on with the band. I saw frank marino in 1980 in landover maryland at the capital centre. It ranks among the best shows I have ever seen. I sat in the 4th row. he was touring on the whats next I believe. The man is amazing, you could have made a believer out of me that night the he is the reincarnate of jimi. He is one of my all time favs.

crazy Frank, I just wanted to tell you that your music was an inspiration to me for many years and truly the anthem of my youth. You'll probably find this humorous, but even while chasing women at the local discos in the 70s, my friends and I would play IV or Strange Universe or Live, both before and after to get the sour taste of disco out of our mouths & minds. I've been on a quest of sorts and am acquiring some of your newer compositions and you've gotten more talented as time progresses!

Now the question is...when o when are you going to play this area?? question If I know you're coming, I'll make it a personal crusade to get all my knuckleheaded friends from that era to come and listen to you and the band. I play guitar and, from my perspective, your prowess & versatility are amazing. On the composing side, your music stands the test of time and truly you are one of the most unheralded and underappreciated musicians of our (or any other) time. May God bless you and yours.

Many regards,

James
